We recorded and studied the ED visits of children, excluding planned ED visits, visits for trauma/poisoning and those that were assigned non deferrable/critical triage codes.
Factors influencing this situation may include inconsistent definitions of appropriateness and non-urgent triage.
It is rapidly becoming available nationally and there is international interest in telephone access to urgent care through non-clinical triage.
Non-urgent triage results are associated with increased hazards (Table 3), which may be related to the latent clinical course of some diseases and results in a prolonged waiting time for the physician's visit, especially in an overcrowded ED.
