The word 'nominative' is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when referring to a linguistic form that is used for a subject of an active sentence or a predicate nominative. For example: "The nominative form of the verb 'runs' is 'run'."

The nominal and pronominal declension had seven cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative, instrumental, and locative.
In the phrase "It was he," "it" and "he" are the same thing: they're both the subject, and thus nominative.
