The quiescent neural progenitors (QNPs) are believed to be the multipotent stem cells residing on the hippocampus [ 5, 22]; they are also known as neural stem cells (NSCs) or, according to an alternative nomenclature, type-1 progenitor cells.
However, in the interest of clarity we will heretofore use the more familiar nomenclature of type I and types IIa-IIe.
Using diabetes autoantibodies and an algorithm to assess insulin sensitivity based on routine clinical measures, this approach classifies >90% of youths with new-onset diabetes into one of the traditional categories, consistent with the current nomenclature of type 1 (evidence of autoimmunity regardless of insulin sensitivity status) and type 2 diabetes (no autoimmunity and insulin resistance).
