As Dean Starkman nicely phrased it in the latest issue of The Columbia Journalism Review, the credit card industry "has shifted from a lending and underwriting paradigm to a sales paradigm; penalties, fees and default interest at rates that were illegal a generation ago are no longer regrettable outcomes to be avoided but central to the business model".
That makes it no less regrettable.
No less regrettable is that they are hardly alone in their obeisance to the gun lobby.
Furthermore, should we not bear in mind that exhortations that fields are shifting or ought to shift to one particular method, problem, or period often repress rather than stimulate novelty, and reflect a narrowing of conversation and debate, perhaps inevitable in diverse fields, but no less regrettable for that?
A number of these things are no doubt regrettable or distasteful in varying degrees, but whether they are immoral depends on what the deals are, what the favours involve, how deep the compromise runs, and how damaging the neglect is (and to what sort of relationship).
