The case against No pier?
No noise, no rubbish, no tramps, no weirdos, no pier.
No pier effect or air venting is considered in the study.
Certainly no pier, like its vulgar neighbour Walton, let alone amusement arcades.
He may have an improvement scheme in mind, but he usually tires of it when he finds out how much it will cost; that there is no pier because the winter seas always wash away the one that was built last summer; and anyway that the people at one end of the island think the new one should be close to them, whereas the people at the other end think they should have it.
It's hard to lay 1,600 feet of pipe off of a beach (to carry municipal rain runoff out to sea) when there's no pier nearby to run workers and supplies to the barge that floats the cranes.

In the case of a bridge with a single span (no intermediate pier), the problem can be recast into a non-dimensional setting, where its length is supposed to be unitary, for simplicity.
Here's a handy tip: if the water is not deep at your dock, or if you have no side pier, walk the boat out away from the dock and anchor it into the sand, and the boat will automatically point itself into the direction of the wind!
