Patients prescribed any nitrate preparation over the previous 3 years (sub-lingual nitrates, tablets or patches as listed in the British National Formulary, BNF) were identified by searching the clinical computer systems.
Furthermore, information on nitrate losses during preparation (washing, cutting, cooking) were considered.
For several vegetables (endive, spinach, cabbage) and for potatoes, experimental data were available regarding nitrate losses during preparation (Driessen 1989; van de Worp 1987).
To all the preparations, silver nitrate was added to a final concentration of 1 mM and reaction was allowed for 72 h (200 rpm) in dark conditions.
L'hirondel and L'hirondel (2002) suggested that in cases where methemoglobinemia has been associated with infant formula made with drinking water containing elevated nitrate or carrot soup preparations, it is possible that bacterial growth within the bottle or stored soup and exogenous conversion of nitrate to nitrite is the source of the problem.

In the preparation of the nitrate salts solution Mg(NO3 2, NaNO3, KNO3, Ca(NO3 2, Fe(NO3 2·6H2O solutions were prepared according to equal Mg2+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Fe2+ concentrations in 30X DOW, respectively.
The precursors used in the preparation were: tetraammineplatinum nitrate [Pt(NH3 4 NO3 2] and hexachloroplatinic acid [H2Pt(Cl)6] for incorporation of platinum by adsorption from solution (ion exchange); and barium acetate [Ba(CH3 COO 2] and barium nitrate [Ba(NO3 2] for incorporation of barium by dry impregnation.
