Dr. Newborn said he reached Ms. Perkins through Foster Hirsch, a film professor at Brooklyn College who had interviewed her in question-and-answer sessions at other screenings.
"I don't like to do the kind of boring lecture I wouldn't want to hear," Dr. Newborn said, of his dramatic methods.
"I started writing this about a decade ago, when I had a newborn," said Mr. García, who has two daughters, ages 11 and 14, and who lives in California.
After learning meditation techniques in class, Lori, the mother of a newborn, said she could observe, but not succumb to her negative thoughts.
A portion of the sponsorship grants, Ms. Newborn said, goes to underwrite the association and its programs for supporting student journalists' education, training working professionals and pushing for more hiring of black journalists.
The breakthrough for her family was making contact with AYME, which helped design a programme "to retrain her mind and body – it was like retraining a newborn", said her mother.
