As was discussed above, the image elements coded by a set of active neurons (coding base groupings) linked by enabled connections is not yet available for report because neurons in other areas are insensitive to the enabling of connections (Fig. 13a, lower panel).
The incremental-grouping process first has to make these linkages explicit by enhancing the responses of a subset of the neurons so that the groupings can be read out.
More recent classifications have called for detailed phenotypic groupings of lower motor neuron [10], [24] or upper motor neuron [25] syndromes, or for a distinction between proximal, symmetrical disease and distal, asymmetrical disease [26].
At r8, each of the four distinct groupings of motor neurons also expressed different combinations of cadherins.
N-neurons are hardly influenced by attention, so that they can form a veridical network that codes features (and base groupings) reliably, whereas A-neurons can label image elements for incremental grouping.
The implication here is that the larger column, although defined by a zone of termination of overlapping thalamocortical axons arriving from a particular topographic location, is made up of minicolumns that represent groupings of vertically arranged neurons innervated directly and indirectly by a unique subsidiary group of those overlapping axons.
These neurons compute what we call base groupings in parallel across the visual scene, and we will argue that this process maps onto preattentive vision (Fig. 3).
To make these latent groupings accessible to other neurons, an enhanced firing rate has to spread through the network of enabled connections.
In the visual cortex, base groupings are coded by specialized neurons.
We interpret this to be due to increased common input from changing groupings of inter-connected CA3 neurons.
In general, the major groupings or aggregates of raphe neurons were sufficiently discrete that their neuromeric position could be resolved with reasonable reproducibility.
