The UN convention on the rights of the child, which Australia ratified in 1990, can be described in shorthand as identifying that children need: Provision (of food, shelter, education) Protection (from harmful and traumatic experiences, including abuse, torture, exploitation, arbitrary detention) The chance to participate in decision-making about their lives.
Broad eligibility criteria at the participating practices will recruit patients: aged 16 years and over; willing to be interviewed and to give informed consent; if a translator is needed provision of translation services in the spoken language of the participant will be available via the normal dental practice access routes to such services.
Follow-up interviews will mainly focus on changes in the respective patients' illness/frailty trajectory, needs and provision of care (i.e. occurrence of crisis, need for hospital admission, and involvement of additional health professionals and/or services).
