The proposed higher flux of long-chain fatty acids through the peroxisomal pathway is supported by the increased mRNA level and activity of peroxisomal catalase that we observed which is needed for detoxification of H2O2 produced by the acyl-CoA oxidase.
Additionally, reactive oxygen species- (ROS-) detoxification mechanisms seem to be affected, since superoxide dismutase (SODC), glutathione S-transferase (GSTO1), and peroxiredoxin (PRDX3, 2) were observed to be decreased in expression by 60 and 120 s TTP treatment although they are needed for detoxification of increased free radicals.
Subjects were excluded from the study if they were currently taking disulfiram, naltrexone or a neuroleptic medication; if they needed medical detoxification from alcohol; or if they had a DSM IV diagnosis of dependence on any drug of abuse other than nicotine or alcohol.
