The BMQ questionnaire assesses perceptions of medication necessity and perceived concerns about medicines.16 31 The Specific scale: assesses patients' beliefs about the necessity of medication for maintaining present and future health (Necessity, score range from 5 25), and the Concern assesses the potential adverse consequences of using medication (Concern, score range from 6 30,).
More importantly, we lack information on the physiological basis and necessity for adding medications.
For example, the balance of concerns and acceptance of the necessity of medication is similar to the concepts of perceived barriers and benefits of action from the health belief model [ 26] as well Horne and Weinman's research [ 13] on perceived risks and benefits in medication adherence.
This finding supports Horne and Weinman's framework on the relationship between necessity of medication and concerns related to medication.
Patients with stronger beliefs about the necessity of medication and who believed medications were generally not overused were more likely to be adherent to medication [ 34].
In another RA study, Treharne et al. [ 34] found that strong beliefs about the necessity of medications and believing medications not to be harmful predicted higher self-reported adherence but data were only available for White patients.
HD patients take a median 8 medications for an average 5 comorbid conditions.[ 10, 11] Additionally, others have demonstrated that patients with chronic kidney disease are not prescribed medications, despite having a medical necessity for pharmacologic treatment.[ 20, 21] The impact of MRP in other ESRD populations, i.e., peritoneal dialysis and transplant patients, warrants further investigation.
Treatment necessity beliefs are perceptions about personal need for medication for both current and future health.
13 14 This approach emphasises the individual's judgement of personal need for medication or other forms of treatment (necessity beliefs) and concerns about the potential adverse consequences of taking it for example, side effects and long-term use.
