Seeds from two populations (natural progenies) of D. stramonium from Central Mexico were collected from the Santo Domingo (SD) population in the state of Morelos (18°N, 99°W) and the Patria Nueva (PN) population in the state of Hidalgo (20°N, 99°W).
Its high value indicates that variation between vials is broad, either as a consequence of meaningful differences in individuals or because of a large natural fluctuation in progeny types and phenotypic classes.
Phenotypic selection was carried out in a natural population, and progenies from selected trees were compared with those of control trees in a common garden experiment.
These donor-derived gametes produced normal progeny through natural fertilization and their genotypes were detected in 6.3% of the individuals from the F1 generation.
After proliferating >1 million-fold in cell number during culture post-thaw, as few as 50,000 donor spermatogonia transplanted into only a single testis/recipient effectively restored fecundity to DAZL-deficient rats, yielding 100% germline transmission to progeny by natural mating.
In each DAZL-deficient recipient, spermatogenesis was regenerated from the spermatogonial lines that had proliferated in culture (>2 million-fold expansion in cell number) for 5 7 months, yielding 100% germline transmission of the donor haplotype to F1 progeny by natural mating (Fig. 3A C; Table 1).
Such traits are likely to be important in the natural environment in enabling progeny to survive until they are able to reproduce.
Specifically, both backcross populations would have higher levels of homozygosity than would be present in the progeny of natural outcrossing individuals, potentially revealing loci that cause sterility when homozygous [ 36].
Third, as shown for P. falciparum isolates from Amazonian Peru, 48 sympatric parasite samples are likely to comprise one or both parental genotypes and the recombinant progeny of natural genetic crosses, allowing for a preliminary evaluation of the relative role of mutations and recombination to generate genome-wide diversity in local parasites.
We randomly chose around five progenies per natural population, except for six French weedy populations (subsample denoted Lauragais B in Table 1) and one volunteer population (FR001, Ostrowski et al. 2010) where at least 25 progenies per population were sampled.
