A key factor to achieve single mode emission is narrow ridge width of the QD laser structure.
In [11], Briggs et al. used sidewall grating as an alternative to the BH structure, but the loss is still high for the narrow ridge width (4 μm).
While we have previously demonstrated [14] low transparency current density and high temperature characteristic ten-layer InAs broad area QD lasers, this paper reports the characteristics of ten-layer narrow ridge width (2 μm) InAs QD lasers.
However, the narrow ridge width will increase the waveguide loss due to the lateral optical absorption and scattering, leading to a high threshold current density (J th) and preventing the high temperature CW operation.

Ouyang et al. [15] has reported narrow RWG InAs QD lasers with ridge width of 8 μm, and observed that lasers with deep-mesa geometry exhibited superior characteristics compared with shallow-mesa devices.
It is commonly known that as the ridge width narrows, the sidewall condition plays an important role in the laser performance, where sidewall scattering/recombination [22] tends to degrade the laser performance.
The LD chip structure has the form of a narrow-stripe ridge waveguide with a ridge width of 2.6 μm and a cavity length of 650 μm.
The labiopalatal alveolar ridge width was significantly narrower (by 15%%) in the MLIA group at 2 mm apical to the CEJ compared to controls.
In situations with a narrow ridge crest, reduction was made to obtain the necessary width of at least 7 mm in the buccal lingual direction.

However, the total labiopalatal alveolar ridge width was on average at approximately 1 mm narrower in the MLIA group at 2 and 4 mm apical to the CEJ, and this finding was statistically significant at 2 mm.
