Another important feature of this software is the automated organization of the selected genes according to NCBI gene names and functional classes, which facilitates the visualization and organization of the microarray data (Fig. 3; Data S3).
Table 4 gives the gene names and functional summaries for these genes.
Recent availability of chickpea whole genome sequences and updating of functional annotations is believed to provide proper naming and functional designations to these unclassified proteins [ 93].
To develop these assemblies as resources for functional studies, we assigned putative gene names and functional categories [Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG)] to assembled transcripts based on sequence comparisons with online databases.
Based on individual gene names and functional annotations, several candidate genes, including those that are involved in immune response, ATP metabolism and detoxification, are identified as duplicated in and among lineages (Table 1).
Revisiting existing annotations also allows application of new biological knowledge to previously uncharacterised loci, and in the case of manual annotation, allows the opportunity to standardise features such as enzymes names and functional characterisation, for better integration with models.
Such a lack of precision highlights the need to make the relationship among compounds' names, class names, substructures and functional groups clear.
