My diary entry for 21 October 1999 records the following exchange with my feisty private secretary in response to my complaint about the rising tide of pointless activity that my job as the lowest form of ministerial life in the department for the environment, transport and the regions seemed to entail: "Nick Raynsford [my predecessor] worked much harder than you do," she said.
