After describing diagnostic criteria and clinical assessment techniques for alcohol use disorders, the scientific basis for three types of interventions are reviewed: (1) preventive interventions designed for nondependent high-risk drinkers, (2) formal treatment for problem drinkers and alcohol-dependent persons, and (3) mutual help organizations for alcoholics and their families.
