The magnitudes of the wage impacts that I estimate for blacks, and the mutual concordance between my local and national estimates and my findings with Boustan's, are unusual compared to studies of foreign immigration to the contemporary USA.

Our mutual concordance score is also more powerful, since it pools information from many miRNA-target pairs to find highly correlated individual pairs.

We then identified miRNA-target mRNA pairs showing the highest difference in mutual concordance score between AD and control (which, again normalized by <img src="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/asset?id=info?doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0008898.e177.PNG" class= inline-graphic"/>, we called differential mutual concordance score).

We define the mutual concordance score of a miRNA-mRNA pair as the sum of their weighted correlation shifts, divided by <img src="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/asset?id=info?doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0008898.e176.PNG" class= inline-graphic"/>.

To compensate for small sample size, we exploited the many-to-many network of miRNA targeting relationships to create a differential mutual concordance score (see details in Methods) and thus identify the miRNA-target mRNA pairs exhibiting the highest correlation change between AD and control.

And second, the correlation between an miRNA and target mRNA should be in the top 30% of correlations involving each of the RNAs, since, in an uncorrelated miRNA-target mRNA pair, the miRNA could be correlated with other targets, and the mRNA could be correlated with other regulating miRNAs, resulting in a high mutual concordance score when in fact the pair is discordant.

This is also seen in the Affymetrix samples where 22 different samples run at least twice have an average pairwise concordance of 99.5% and average mutual call rate of 92.6%.

In the Illumina samples, we have seven samples run at least twice (including the 3 reference samples) with all pairs of replicates showing an average concordance of 99.6% and average pairwise mutual call rate (genotype called in both samples) of 95.4% (Table 2).

This concordance may be attributed to several different mechanisms - assortative mating, mutual influence, or common pathogenic factors [ 12].
