The haplotype of the single museum specimen originating from Negros (BMNH 1897.5.13.471) is separated from the next Panay haplotype by 9 mutational steps in the network and 4 diagnostic mutations in the alignment (Table 5).
Apart from these three individuals, the two recent populations of Panay and Negros are clearly separated by at least 17 mutational steps in the network and seven diagnostic mutations in the alignment.
All the remaining strains were separated by more than 10 mutational steps in the parsimony analysis.
Although the existence of several mutational steps in a haplotype network is indeed indicative of allopatric fragmentation, it could also result from non-sampled haplotypes from intermediate populations.
This high nucleotide diversity on the islands is a consequence of the existence of two divergent mtDNA haplotype groups (separated by seven mutational steps) in our sample of 12 birds.
A notable feature of these predictions is that the number of tumour suppressors (or equivalent) is not expected to be large, plausibly ranging from about 1 to 5 tumour suppressors (i.e. 2 10 mutational steps in a multistage model), although the occurrence of significant clonal expansion (see next paragraph) could raise the upper limit.

Specifically, for the first test statistic we evaluated, T1 0) (which measures the similarity in metabolic rates of individuals with identical haplotypes), P = 0.061, and for T1(1) (which measures the similarity in metabolic rates of individuals that differ by at most one mutational step in the network in Figure 3), P = 0.208.
A second mutational step in the gyrA gene produces high-level resistance to FQ [ 6].
The haplotype network (Fig. 2b) revealed that most NE haplotypes are connected to each other (generally differing by only one mutational step) in a star-like fashion with a central haplotype (Mlh16), which is also found in SE populations.
The haplotype network indicates six other haplotypes connected to ILOJ514II by = 2 mutational steps, resulting in a star-like pattern.
The mutational steps found in SGT-2, 3 and 4 may be associated with infective cycles subsequent to the first, while the presence of a more distantly related strain, SGT-5, testifies to the evolutionary history of this lineage in this region.
