Hence, in the original study for 3600 individuals the critical mutation rates varied between 0.88 and 3.66 with a mean value, normalized according to our criterion for estimating the critical mutation rate, of 1.386 (standard deviation, SD = 0.777).
Under this assumption, a genome with a uniform mutation rate will exhibit unit standard deviation in its r distribution, while a heterogeneously mutating genome will exhibit a larger standard deviation [ 2].

To account for uncertainty in the actual mtDNA mutation rate, we specified a standard deviation of 20%% of the mean rate.
In order to cover the proposed limits of the mutation rate, we used a standard deviation hyperprior of 0.25 and chose for mtDNA a mean Standard mutation rate of 2.34 × 10-5 (log = -4.630784) and a Slow mutation rate of 5.4 × 10-6 (log = -5.267606) (Table 1).

Each library consisted of approximately 20,000 variants and had a mean mutation rate of 3.0 per kilobase (standard deviation 1.9).
The relaxed clock models estimated an uncorrelated standard deviation of the mutation rate (ucld.stdev) abutting zero, providing evidence for a strict rather than relaxed molecular clock.
For the above diversity values, μg = 3.86 × 10-4 and σg = 15.76, where μg is the geometric mean mutation rate and σg is the geometric standard deviation.
An uncorrelated lognormal relaxed molecular clock was used with mean mutation rate of 0.01 mutations/site/million years and standard deviation of 0.0015, assuming a normal distribution, as prior information.
