We wanted to observe differences in the muscle maturation process between the both extreme breeds.
Even if the overall muscle maturation process is the same for each genotype, some important differences were found between the extreme breeds that affected crucial biological processes (Table 1 and Additional file 4).
These genes may illustrate the differences in the muscle maturation process between purebred MS and LW piglets.> -wrap-foot> italiclic, genes are up-regulated in MS only, and in bold, genes are up-regulated in LW only.

Muscle development in early TC embryos is more intense than in YK embryos, and is more intense in YK piglets than in TC piglets from the natal day to 1-week postnatum; this suggests that muscle fiber formation in TC pigs is initiated earlier than in YK pigs (30 40 dpc), while the muscle maturation processes are more complicated in early YK piglets (0 1 wpn).
Globally, the process of muscle maturation was the same in each studied genotype: muscle fiber proliferation is switched off at around day 90, and the enzymes coding genes for glycogen and lipid metabolism are up-regulated at around day 110 to ensure regulation of mechanisms essential for survival at birth.
TSA administration resulted in a significant decrease in the transcript levels of embryonic MHC and neonatal MHC isoforms suggesting that these muscles were further along the maturation process than those from Smn 2B/− animals given DMSO (Fig. 5F).
Furthermore, these differences appeared also at protein levels, in particular at P60 and P90 in spinal cord, in which sexual maturation was completed and at the early stages of maturation process in skeletal muscle.
Signal reciprocity allows prostate stromal fibroblasts to control epithelial cell proliferation [ 7], while epithelial cells control such processes as stromal smooth muscle maturation [ 8].
Taken together, these results suggest that TNF stimulates satellite cell activation and muscle regeneration but, as expected, impinges on the maturation process.
Muscle development is described to end around 90 days of gestation [ 21], and gives way to the maturation process in order for the organs and tissues to be functional at birth.
Although there is evidence to indicate that an increase in oxidative capacity is part of the maturation process in horses [ 64] it has been demonstrated that exercise training, not growth, causes increases in whole muscle activity of the oxidative enzyme succinate dehydrogynase and changes in muscle fibre type composition in young Thoroughbred horses [ 14].
