Of 3419 patients, 53.6% had mastectomy and this was predicted by deprivation, age, tumour size and hospital, all of which retained significance on multivariate analysis, except deprivation.
On multivariate analysis, age (P<0.001), deprivation (P<0.05), Dukes stage (P⩽0.001) and C-reactive protein concentration (P<0.05) all retained independent significance.
