It has been cultured about 50 years ago from sputa and thoracentesis fluids of cigarette smokers with a history of pulmonary disease and from lung cancerous matter.

Frozen oropharyngeal, sputa, and saliva specimens were thawed on ice.
We collected 159 specimens from 16 subjects at three visits over one year consisting of 47 oropharyngeal swabs, 38 expectorated sputa, 47 induced sputa, and 27 saliva specimens.
The sputa and oropharyngeal specimens were divided into B and C split-samples; thus, 24 DNA samples were analyzed.
Following enrollment, oropharyngeal, expectorated and induced sputa, and salivary specimens were collected from subjects at baseline, one month and one year visits.
M. tuberculosis-specific RNA amplification was performed in 22 of these 27 subjects (8 sputa and 16 broncholavage) and resulted positive in 75% of sputa (6/8; CI, 34.9 96.8) and in 93.8% of broncholavages (15/16; CI, 69.8 99.8) with an overall sensitivity of 86.4% (19/22; CI, 65.1 97.1).
PCR and cloning of these sputa and sequencing of 89 clones showed several pathogens such as S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia besides the oral flora and anaerobes (Figure 3).
