There are no systematic data available on the distribution of protein species derived from all genes in a single organism, but evidence for the widespread occurrence of multiple protein species per protein can be found in many publications that present the results of 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE).
In most of the stress related studies GAPC showed post translational modification like phosphorylation and was found to be present as multiple protein species.
Although the majority of spots identified corresponded to a single protein, there were a few spots where MALDI TOF/TOF data indicated a mixture of multiple protein species, which was likely due to proteins co-migrating in one spot.
For the sake of simplicity, we considered that binding to each site occurs with equal affinity (i.e., K1 = K2 = K3 = KD) and where weak binding does not result in multiple protein species occupying multiple ligand sites (i.e., P2L and P3L).
Using these assays, 21 single blastosol samples were screened and the 9 tested proteins were detected, thus demonstrating the ability of targeted proteomics to measure multiple protein species deriving from a single embryo blastocoel (Tables EV6 and EV7).
Western blots for endogenous Gpr177 using intestinal lysates showed multiple protein species, reflecting previously reported post-translational modification and alternative splicing events (Tanaka et al., 2002; Yu et al., 2010, 2014a).

Multiple core-protein species were detected for all of the SLRPs (except fibromodulin) in the degenerate osteoarthritic articular cartilage and menisci.
Where a protein from one species matched multiple proteins from other species (with the same E value and identity), the genomic context was used to improve orthology assignment.
Native vaults are composed of multiple copies of three protein species and several copies of a small untranslated RNA.
