The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of antenatal corticosteroids on the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome in singleton infants and multiple infants who weigh <1500 g <span class="lh">and are delivered at 24 to 32 weeks of gestation.
The main outcomes were hospital mortality and survival free from major morbidities (IVH grade 3-4, cPVL, ROP stage ≥3, BPD), and were assessed separately for single and multiple infants.
Single and multiple infants were considered separately.
Multiple infant, maternal, and health system variables were related to the number of WBVs received by Medicaid-enrolled infants.
Our findings suggest that multiple infant, maternal, and health system variables are significantly related to the number of WBVs in the first three years of life received by Medicaid-enrolled infants in our study.
Although the present study showed that gestational age was not a significant predictor of neonatal mortality of extremely premature newborns, an excess morbidity rate among infants who were delivered before 26 weeks of gestation and among multiple infants was observed.
Therefore, offering caesarean section deliveries to infants before 26 weeks of gestation, especially to multiple infants, should be carefully judged against the short- and long-term neonatal outcome.
Whatever the light-source, the effectiveness of phototherapy devices can be compromised by erratic power supply, inadequate skin exposure from overcrowding with multiple infants placed under a single device, sub-optimal irradiance levels, and poor device maintenance [ 18, 19].
