The CR patient had intestinal type of adenocarcinoma, which directly invaded into the liver, as revealed by a CT scan and ultrasonography, and had multiple distant (para-aortic) lymph node metastasis before treatment.
4T1 cells were chosen to allograft, because the 4T1 tumor is highly tumorigenic and invasive, unlike most tumor models, can spontaneously metastasize from the primary tumor in the mammary gland to multiple distant sites including lymph nodes, blood, liver, lung, brain, and bone [ 30, 31], The progressive spread of 4T1 metastases is very similar to that of human breast cancer.
Sites of metastasis were grouped as: bone; visceral (lesions in thoracic or abdominal viscera); central nervous system; distant cutaneous; distant lymph nodes; multiple organs (metastases diagnosed at two or more sites within 6 months after the first distant metastasis); and unknown site.
In cases of synchronous multiple cancers with distant metastasis (liver, pulmonary, and/or distant lymph node metastasis), it is sometimes difficult to diagnose the primary site of the distant metastasis and to decide on the order of priority of treatment among the synchronous cancers.
Fluorescence was also detected in the testes, seminal vesicles, lung, kidney, liver, heart, lymph nodes, tibia and spine of both groups, suggesting that primary tumors spread to multiple distant organs/sites causing the death of the animals.
The most probable next transition for this group is to distant lymph nodes, with probability 0.31.
Twelve rats received intraperitoneal injection of HSA800, a smaller diameter, NIR lymph tracer designed for uptake into distant lymph nodes.
After 24 h, HSA800 appeared in these and distant lymph node groups such as the superior mediastinum (Fig. 1).
For all of the patients aggregated (Figure 4a), bone, chest wall, and mammary lymph nodes are the spreader sites, and lung/pleura, distant lymph nodes, and liver are the sponge sites.
Distant metastases are reported in 7 % of the patients with frequently involved sites being distant lymph nodes, liver, lung and brain.
