Good communication is particularly vital for successful cancer treatment as patients will have multiple anxieties at different stages of their cancer journey.
Table 3 shows the prevalence of multiple anxiety disorders and the co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive disorders (anxiety-depression comorbidity).
To describe the study samples, we examined the composition of the samples regarding the prevalence of specific disorders, the occurrence of multiple anxiety disorders and comorbidity between anxiety and depressive disorders.
For each of the specific anxiety disorders, the occurrence of multiple anxiety disorders 56-888%) and anxiety-depression comorbidity 55-744%) was more the rule than an exception.
For example, Young et al. (1993) found multiple anxiety disorders in 32% of bipolar disorder outpatients.
In specific, the rates of multiple anxiety disorders, separation anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder had substantially increased.
It should be noted that the already high prevalence of multiple anxiety disorders was probably underestimated to some extent because specific phobia, OCD and PTSD had not been assessed in three studies (see Table 2).
One each had Down's syndrome, oppositional defiant disorder, enuresis, visual impairment, harmful use of cannabis, multiple anxiety disorders or phobias.
Within the fully adjusted model, frequent victimization was associated with almost a threefold increased risk of having multiple anxiety diagnoses and/or comorbid anxiety and depression in adulthood (OR: 2.97, 95% CI: 1.63 5.41, P <.001).
