Lactoferrin, a cationic iron-binding glycoprotein of 80 kDa belonging to the transferrin family [ 28], is present in milk, tears, saliva, and mucous secretions of most mammals and plays a major role in the immune system of newborns by modulating immune functions.
Group T5 showed significant improvement in the intestinal wall where regular and intact mucosa were observed with increasing numbers of goblet lining cells, along with obvious mucous secretions on the surface epithelial cells and crypt of Lieberkuhn (Fig. 3).
Saliva also contains a mucous secretion to protect epithelial cells from mechanical as well as chemical challenges [ 3].
Changes in the type of mucous secretion, with predominance of sialomucins, were observed in the majority of the areas showing mild to moderate dysplasia whilst the surrounding normal epithelium produced suphated material.
