"There's been a long-term concern by physicians that patients, either because of injury, disease, anxiety or too much pain, don't know what they're doing," said Dr. Richard Zaner, a professor of medical ethics and philosophy of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

The pain question was: "How much pain do you have in your operated hip?" patients could respond- 'none'mild'ld'moderateate'severeere'; none/mild was reference and moderate and severe categories were combined.
In each study patients were asked, "During the last 48 hours, how much pain do you have (1) walking on a flat surface; (2) going up or down stairs; (3) at night while in bed; (4) sitting or lying; (5) standing upright?".
