The phones, which just four years ago were as bulky as suitcases and cost thousands of dollars to buy and hundreds more to operate, are now not much larger than cellphones and can be purchased for a few hundred dollars or rented for less than $50 a week (plus $1 to $2 a minute for calls).
Goodlink software allows users to send and receive electronic messages and lengthy documents on wireless devices not much larger than ordinary cellphones.
Mr. Raman says the feature is intended to help low-vision users, but it could also prove useful to a much larger population, especially on cellphones and other devices with small screens.
