Some show reasonably constant growth, but responses can also 'plateau': firing rates remain at one (20 spikes/s for a 50 ms tone) spike per-stimulus for a 40 or 50 dB range of sound levels, before then rising steeply.
Since processing differences between HF and LF words have been found on early components (as early as 120 ms) probably reflecting pre-semantic processes of different reading strategies, we thought it possible to detect such differences when faster presentation rates than 1 stimulus per 800 ms – 1 stimulus per 2000 ms are used.
What is more, the uncertainty effect size with the peripheral indicator stimulus, 75 ms per doubling of N, was quite similar to that observed for the analogous target indicator stimulus condition in Experiment 1: 79 ms per doubling of N. Also, as in Experiment 1, the nature of the indicator stimulus influenced the uncertainty effect size for the keypress responses.
Although, the difference between these estimates was not statistically reliable, both differed reliably from the estimate for the repetition trials in the same indicator stimulus condition, 0 ms per doubling of N [ 5↔5] for the central indicator stimulus and –3 ms per doubling of N [ 8↔2] for the peripheral indicator stimulus.
