The many articles and blog posts written in defense of that useless "i" were quite moving, frankly, and I was firmly on the side of those rooting for the "i" to stay, so, hard though I find it to spell "ophthalmologist," I can't reasonably criticize the spelling without risking charges of hypocrisy.
