Research into somitogenesis has been both experimental and mathematical.
More recently, the importance of FN in somitogenesis has also been established in zebrafish [29], [30], Xenopus laevis [31], [32] and chick [33].
Thus, the form of Mef2cb that is normally present in developing zebrafish embryos during somitogenesis has unique myogenic potential that is not shared by Mef2ca 4–5–6, the predominant Mef2c isoform in skeletal muscle.
Several models of somitogenesis have been put forward.
Consequently a significant proportion of papers on the mathematical modelling of somitogenesis have focused on zebrafish to date.
Models of somitogenesis have been appearing for over 30 years, evolving in parallel with advances in experimental procedures and discoveries (see [21] and references therein).
Recent discoveries in the field of somitogenesis have confirmed, for the most part, the feasibility of the clock and wavefront model.
In addition, and maybe in the Experimental Procedures section, a statement explaining how the model can fit both the chicken and mouse somitogenesis, which oscillations for instance have a different period, would be useful.
Our results define at least three phases of segmentation during the 5 days of mouse somitogenesis (Figure S4).
