iPSCs were developed in 2006 by Takahashi and Yamanaka, who showed that mouse somatic cells, such as fibroblasts, could be reprogrammed to pluripotency with retroviral expression of four transcription factors OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, and c-MYC and achieve similar morphology, pluripotency, self-renewal, and gene expression as ESCs, without the requirement for an embryo [ 73].
