In order to identify novel small noncoding RNAs potentially responsible for the functional properties of SSCs, we compared the genome-wide small RNA expression profiles of different mouse testis-derived cell populations, including somatic cells, developing GCs, and in vitro expanded SSCs.
The site where the axon starts being myelinated is still an open question for many neuronal populations, including mouse MNs: some chicken spinal MNs have a myelin sheath starting immediately after the AIS [ 54], while cat visceral preganglionic MNs have a myelin sheath starting several hundred microns after the AIS [ 45].
Flow cytometry further identified the diversity of immune cell populations, including macrophages, T cells, and B cells in PND1 mouse lungs (Supplementary Figure 14).
These findings are consistent with the report that discrete neuronal populations, including thalamic projection neurons and cortical interneurons precede general cortical atrophy in Cln1 −/− mice.

Cells in the caudal lateral epiblast adjacent to the primitive streak [also known as the stem zone (SZ) in the chick] (Wilson et al., 2009) express both early neural and mesodermal genes (Delfino-Machín et al., 2005), and there is evidence in the mouse that this cell population includes axial stem cells (Tzouanacou et al., 2009; Wilson et al., 2009).
In mouse populations, the minimum number of repeats is 9, including the first and last repeats (Fig. 3).
