Madagascar is the world's only home to about 40 species of lemurs, including two previously known species of mouse lemurs.
(Mouse lemurs live only in Madagascar and the Comoros Islands).
Scientists working in Madagascar have discovered three previously unknown species of mouse lemurs, the world's smallest primate.
Exceptions are mouse lemurs (Microcebus), gentle lemurs (Hapalemur), and ruffed lemurs (Varecia), which bear more helpless (altricial) infants and carry their young in their mouth.
Mouse lemurs, from Madagascar, snooze for more than fifteen hours a day, but only an hour of this is REM sleep.
The lodge also offers night hikes, which provide perhaps the only chance to see mouse lemurs.
An earlier version of this post, quoting a researcher, referred incompletely to mouse lemurs' current habitat.
"I assume there's still quite a few mouse lemurs to be found," Dr. Radespiel said.
Within Lemuriformes, it belongs to the family Cheirogaleidae, which contains the mouse lemurs, dwarf lemurs, giant mouse lemurs, fork-marked lemurs, and hairy-eared dwarf lemur.
Species that park their offspring include nocturnal species (e.g. mouse lemurs, sportive lemurs, and dwarf lemurs), bamboo lemurs, and ruffed lemurs.
