Mdx:utrn heterozygote mice (generously provided by Robert Grange, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, although originally generated by Mark Grady and Josh Sanes at Washington University, St . Louis) were bred to generate mdx: utrn-/ (udx) mice lacking both utrophin and functional dystrophin.
Gsk3 Neurod6 mice were generated by mating Gsk3a −/−, Gsk3b loxp/loxp with Neurod6 Cre mice generously provided by Dr KA Nave (Goebbels et al., 2006).
Breeding pairs of homozygous wild type (WT) and knockout (KO) mice, generously supplied by Drs. I.B.
The tau-lacZ knock-in mice were raised in our laboratory from mice generously provided by Dr. Samer Hattar (Johns Hopkins University).
Transgenic MCK- PGC-1α mice, generously provided by Dr. Bruce M. Spiegelman Dana-Farber Cancer Institutee and the Department of Cell Biology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA), express PGC-1α in skeletal muscle at physiological levels under the control of the muscle creatine kinase (MCK) promoter [18] which is particularly active in type II fibers.
In addition to human specimens, renal tissues were obtained from wild-type and MKP-1 gene knockout mice, generously provided by Bristol-Myers SqUSAb Co. (Princeton, NJ, USand and used for validation of MKP-1 assay.
The preproopiomelanocortin promoter driving cre recombinase (POMC-cre) mouse was generously provided by Joel Elmquist; it was generated in FVB/NJ mice and previously backcrossed three times to C57BL/6J as previously reported (Balthasar et al. 2004; McHugh et al. 2007).
The kainate receptor subunit 1 promoter driving cre recombinase (KA-cre) mouse was generously provided by Susumu Tonegawa; it was generated in C57BL/6J mice, crossed to the Roas26 reporter mouse (Soriano 1999) and then subsequently backcrossed eight times to C57BL/6J mice as previously reported (Nakazawa et al. 2002).
The Nex-cre mouse was generously provided by Dr Klaus-Armin Nave (Max Planck Institute, Göttingen, Germany).
As such and in parallel, we performed NPD assays on a bitransgenic CF mouse model generously provided to our UAB CF Center Mouse Transgenic CORE by Dr. Jeffrey Whitsett.
