Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, primitive mountain footpath and equestrian trail in the western United States that, when complete, will extend from north to south some 3,100 miles (5,000 km), from the border of Canada to the border of Mexico, through a 100-mile- (160-km) wide corridor spanning the Continental Divide.
The wilderness is open to hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing and equestrian sports.
New as it is, the trail already has its own book, "The Tahoe Rim Trail: A Complete Guide for Hikers, Mountain Bikers and Equestrians," by Tim Hauserman (Wilderness Press, $15.95).
Mr. Riker said the group, which has about 1,000 members, was asking for the same accommodations hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers and other user groups had on county and state lands.
"There have already been a number of accidents caused by speeding and aggressive mountain bikers with equestrians and pedestrians, though no biker has remained in place for long enough to be asked for their name," he said.
The trail is used by equestrians, mountain bikers and hunters during season.
"Mountain pose!" said Janice Baxter, equestrian and yoga instructor, as we paused on horseback at the top of the trail.
The Phoenix area provides many options for hikers, mountain bikers, runners and equestrians.
Hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers began to trespass with impunity.
"If you could have an Olympics in New York City that could not bring traffic but would only bring money, that would be great," said Mr. Molinaro, whose borough stands to get equestrian events and mountain biking.
