Studies of the neural correlates to motor adaptation suggest that certain areas at the cerebellum as well as the motor cortex demonstrate plasticity during adaptation to force perturbations [17], [19] and are probably also active during the task reported in this study.
Based on these findings, studies involving humans have evaluated the effects of each pole on cortex excitability through the stimulation of the primary motor cortex, demonstrating that anodal and cathodal stimulation respectively enhances and diminishes cortex excitability [ 58]. tDCS is a neuromodulation technique that has piqued the interest of a large number of researchers in recent years.
Field potential recordings from motor cortex show oscillatory activity.
In the study by Tamura et al. [12], a SPECT analysis under the condition of 1 Hz rTMS of right motor cortex (M1), demonstrated a significant relative rCBF decrease in the right medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), and a significant increase in the caudal part of the right anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) both correlating with pain reduction [12].
Areas of primary and secondary motor cortex, as well as cingulate cortex, demonstrated somewhat lower WFA staining intensity, with hippocampus having the lowest expression of PNNs.
Soon after the development of functional MRI [ 1], Biswal et al. described oscillatory hemodynamics in low frequency range (<0.1 Hz) within regions in the motor cortex by demonstrating spontaneous blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) fluctuations in a highly correlated manner between functionally associated brain areas when the brain is "at rest" [ 2].
The primary motor cortex did not demonstrate any ramping of activity in these trials (Figure 6c).
In contrast to sensory cortex, the primary motor cortex failed to demonstrate any increase in activity under speed or accuracy conditions (Figure 6b).
It is possible that the reorganisation of the motor cortex in knee OA demonstrated here might represent a new motor strategy to protect the part from further injury/pain.
We scored aggregates in the motor cortex as this region demonstrated a high level of aggregates, while aggregate number could still be counted accurately, making it the most suitable region for this assay.
