In a separate research area, investigators have been interested in self-motion perception during purely imagined movements.
We have recently introduced this method as a way of more closely investigating inertially-based self-motion perception during complex, passive movements in the absence of vision [17].
The detailed characterization of self-motion perception during actual movement is then compared to the pattern of pointing behaviour observed during imagined self-motion.
Here we used a novel continuous pointing method to a) provide a more detailed characterization of self-motion perception during actual walking and b) compare the pattern of responding during actual walking to that which occurs during imagined walking.
In this study, a novel continuous pointing method developed by our group was used to measure and precisely characterize aspects of self-motion perception during actual movement and imagined movement through space.
In contrast, our current findings demonstrated that auditory motion information triggered motion perception to static visual stimuli and drove motion perception against global visual motion signals.
For example, auditory motion could direct an ambiguous, bistable motion perception to an unambiguous one [25].
Furthermore, the lateral auditory motion altered visual motion perception in a global motion display where different localized motion signals of multiple visual stimuli were combined to produce a coherent visual motion perception.
Specifically, the lateral auditory motion perceptually cancelled out the opposite lateral visual motion information and induced consistent motion perception to the visual stimuli.
The model differs from traditional accounts of head-centered motion perception in two important ways.
This symptom has been related to a sustained deficit in functional MRI during tasks that require motion perception (Raz et al., 2011).
