RCTs are the most rigorous and, if well conducted, present the lowest risk of bias.
Although well conducted, most previous studies were subject to incomplete participation, with rates as low as 61%, and suboptimal comparison groups, including siblings (Teta et al, 1986; Kelaghan et al, 1988; Haupt et al, 1994; Mitby et al, 2003) and population values (Pastore et al, 2001); healthy controls were used in only one study (Langeveld et al, 2003).
On these bases, the author [ 4] concluded that while most studies reporting a positive association are of good quality, over half report no association with any adverse birth outcome and most of the latter are also well conducted.
Most of the included reviews were reasonably well conducted and reported (table 2).
