The most variable species were L. borgpetersenii (0.086 rpoB) and L. noguchii (0.069).

Finally, the phylogeographic pattern described in our study for the most karyotypically variable species, M. minutoides, can help to design further sampling of chromosomal data in lineages, where the karyotypes are not yet known.
Actually this region was proven to be among the most variable in this species.
Next, we selected those genes that are most variable in each species and subjected them to pattern-recognition analysis [ 32].
Wilcoxon signed rank tests further showed that the most variable barcode between species was psbK- psbI, followed by trnH- psbA, matK and atpF- atpH (Additional file 2).
