EF1α and the S. gregaria ortholog for CG13220 were selected by the GeNorm software [226] for having the most stable transcript levels in the studied samples.

To do so, we defined an "ideal reference gene" as a gene which 1) has the most stable transcript abundance within the biological context of a specific experiment, and 2) has an abundance of transcripts similar to that of the target genes under investigation.

A further piece of evidence in support of Hypothesis 1 was that from the top 50 transcripts that were most stable across all conditions in Figure 1, all of them were found to have a considerable variability of expression in at least five distinct tissue types from a set of 186 tissues available in Genevestigator (see Additional file 3).
