The most recent paralogs examined Pg11a and Pg11c, are both undergoing positive selection and might be acquiring new functions.
Specifically, the motif-free ribosomal genes we used to estimate nucleotide variation may not all be the most recent paralogs, as initially assumed.
For instance, inverted duplications are less common among the most recent paralogs in humans than in C. elegans [ 13], but their proportions are stable with age.
* p < 0.1, ** p < 0.05, *** p < 0.001 (χ2 or Wilcoxon test for comparison of the respective imprinted group to autosomal data) Compared to genome-wide data, human imprinted genes show less identity with their most recent paralogs on protein level (p < 0.06, Table 3).
For the most recent paralogs pair (Pg11a- Pg11c), the sequences obtained were labelled according to the primer combinations used for amplification and sequencing: when using primers designed for Pg11a (respectively Pg11c), the sequencing product was qualified as ' Pg11a' copy (respectively ' Pg11c' copy).

Data refer to the evolutionary most recent paralog of each imprinted gene.
aIn cases where more than one paralog was available, protein identities were analyzed only for the gene and its evolutionary most recent paralog.
It has been asserted that AroAIα_ F(PHE-inhibited DAHP synthase) was the most recent paralog, acquired just after divergence of the lower-gamma Proteobacteria [ 53].
For each of the ribosomal genes in P. tetraurelia, we retrieved the most recent paralog according to the 'ALL-against-ALL' Blast analysis and the analysis of the synteny between blocks of duplicated genes performed by Aury et al. [ 20].
These most recent E. falciformis paralogs are likely less diverged simply due to a shorter time allowed for divergence.
These data suggest that the adaptive radiation of mammals was accompanied by a burst of duplication of zinc finger genes, which are located in the first (most recent) peak of paralog pairs.
