The most distant populations were vMøs and sLCs (694 DETs), while vLCs and vCD14- DCs were the most similar (only 5 DETs).
Indeed, greater gene flow occurred between the nearest populations, while gene flow was close to zero among the most distant populations.
Pairwise FST values between the most distant populations of these two species are similar to those reported for S. contortum in this study, however it is obvious that many populations of S. contortum are likely to exist between those sampled in this study, and sampling gaps have been found to inflate FST [ 59].
Further increases in the number of presumed clusters led to separation of other populations, most often in peripheral parts of the distribution of the three main genetic groups (see Figure 2 for the situation in K = 7, where the most distant populations in specific groups were assigned to separate clusters).
This is largely consistent with research into the connectivity of hydrothermal vent vestimentiferans on the EPR, where for both Riftia pachyptila and Tevnia jerichonana there appears to be little gene flow between the most distant populations of these species [ 20, 21].

The morphology of Antarctic Sclerolinum also generally fits within the variation observed for S. contortum from other areas, most closely resembling the soft tissue morphology of the most distant population, from HMMV (Additional file 1: Table S1).
Pairwise population differentiation was very high between regions and the most geographically distant populations were also the most genetically differentiated (Table 2).
In the Pacific Northwest, the two most geographically distant populations (localities 06 and 07) were separated from a main cluster including the remaining populations.
For example, the two most geographically distant populations, J'aba and N. Diyarbakir (850 km apart), exhibited a low value of genetic distance (0.067), while two adjacent populations, Gamla and Yehudiyya (7 km apart), showed a relatively high value of genetic distance (0.137).
Gulf was the most genetically distant population, independently of the isoline (Gs or Gr).
In most cases, geographically distant populations belong to genetically highly distinct lineages that could be considered as candidate new species.
