This agrees with previous reports on Drosophila, C. elegans and yeast [ 36], in which the same glutamine-coding triplet was the most common in tandem triplet repeats.
SSRs with five tandem repeats (69.9%) were the most common, followed by six tandem repeats (21.6%), seven tandem repeats (5.4%), eight tandem repeats (1.1%), and four tandem repeats (1.7%).
The frequencies of EST-SSRs with different numbers of tandem repeats were calculated and are shown in Table 3. SSRs with six tandem repeats (24.82%) were the most common, followed by five tandem repeats (15.98%), seven tandem repeats (15.55%), eight tandem repeats (12.28%), and > 10 tandem repeats (11.36%).
The most common type of tandem repeat had period sizes of 42, 14 and 12, which totaled 42% of all tandem repeats found in the mitochondrial genome (Additional file 3: Table S3).
The SSRs with six tandem repeats (28.44%) were the most common, followed by five tandem repeats (26.92%), > 10 tandem repeats (13.36%), seven tandem repeats (13.26%), eight tandem repeats (8.50%), nine tandem repeats (5.87%), and ten tandem repeats (3.64%).
As is shown in Table 5, the most abundant repeat type was dinucleotides (51.0%, 6,659), and the most common number of tandem repeats was 6 (24.4%, 3,179).
Intrachromosomal rearrangements were found to be far more frequent than between chromosomes and the most common event was tandem duplications, but with a high degree of variation among tumors.
The most common abnormalities noted were tandem gait, hearing loss, abnormal reflexes, and muscle weakness.
The most common TRs are short tandem repeats (STRs), or microsatellites.
The most common mechanism is a tandem duplication of a ≈2 Mb-fragment of #7q, giving rise to a fusion between two genes, resulting in a transforming fusion protein, consisting of the N-terminus of KIAA1549 and the kinase domain of BRAF.
