In brief, we collected blood-engorged female mosquitoes from field sites and identified species of vertebrate hosts of individual mosquitoes using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification of host DNA in blood meals.
Care should also be taken when interpreting the results of feeding assays as the mosquitoes used, and their biting behaviour is likely to be different from that seen in wild mosquitoes in field situations (Bousema et al., 2013).
For seven days they have been forced to camp in a mosquito-infested field in broiling heat.
To date, several SFPs have been described in insects, such as flies and mosquitoes (Diptera), field crickets (Orthoptera), honeybee (Hymenoptera), moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) and in the beetle genus Tribolium [ 25, 26, 45– 50].
Importantly, the majority (88%) of our SNPs from wild-derived A. gambiae are novel, which will help the community to address the molecular mechanisms of trait determination, as well as potentially reconciling discrepancies when comparing results obtained from laboratory mosquitoes versus field isolates [ 20].
Our detection of LACV in Ae. japonicus mosquitoes from field-collected eggs in 2005 and the ability of LACV to be transmitted transovarially in Ae. triseriatus mosquitoes suggests that future research should examine the possibility of vertical transmission of LACV in invasive Ae. japonicus mosquitoes.
The results from the quantitative Reverse Transcriptase - Polymerase Chain Reaction were comparable to those achieved by cell culture which was performed on a subset of the field mosquito pools screened during the 2012 surveillance season.
"In case you are a little bit late in getting the mosquito infected in field, you can still be in time to affect the transmission of malaria," she says.
This effect was restricted to the field mosquito population and was not apparent in the laboratory colony.
