Although the study is limited by the lack of randomization, the difference in duration of mechanical ventilation persisted after multivariate analysis incorporating severity of illness, mortality, indication for mechanical ventilation, use of chemical paralysis, presence of tracheostomy, and number of acquired organ system derangements.
Essentially no relationship was found a between parity and total mortality although indications for an increased mortality in women with more than 4 children may be suggested (Table 2).
