In these cases, to rely more on molecular than morphological evidence is an obvious choice, but this does not mean that morphology cannot be informative.
Since the lack of eyewitness, the use of morphological evidence is the only instrument to reconstruct the event and to characterise its features.
Here we showed, that Raman microspectroscopy in combination with SEM imaging and elemental analyses can be used to detect biological signatures that have been preserved for long periods of time even if remnant morphological evidence is missing.
