HIF-1 α plays more important roles in endothelial cell proliferation, migration and vessel sprouting; HIF-2 α plays a more significant role in controlling vascular morphogenesis, integrity and assembly.
This is of special interest as these genes are crucial regulators of dendrite morphogenesis and synapse assembly (Ciani & Salinas, 2005; Breunig et al, 2007; Ables et al, 2011) and could explain at least in part, the defects in dendritic development due to DYRK1A overexpression in the present study and recent reports (Guedj et al, 2009; Tejedor & Hämmerle, 2011; Martinez de Lagran et al, 2012).
