A distylous population comprises two morphs: one is the short-styled morph (S-morph) with short styles and long anthers, and the other is the long-styled morph (L-morph) with long styles and short anthers.
On "Apply," she hopped up and down and wiggled the microphone cord until it was a slithering, ever-morphing S, pleasing no one but herself.
The pollen of the S-styled morph is significantly larger than in the L-styled morph (Table 2), a commonly observed phenomenon in distylous species (Ganders [1979]).
However, the S-morph never set any fruit, whereas the L-morph never had pollen grains (Watanabe et al. 2014 b ).
Anther height was significantly greater in the S-styled morph than in the L-styled morph, while stigma height was significantly less in the S-styled morph than in the L-styled morph (Table 1).
If this situation continues, the S-morph would supply only pollen grains like a male plant and the L-morph would receive them like a female plant.
In the Tienchi population, we found 21 L-styled morph individuals and 21 S-styled morph individuals.
The inflorescence was 12.9 – 23.6 mm in diameter in the S-styled morph and 11.32 19.9999 mm in the L-styled morphs.
The pollen of the S-styled morph was more than 50 μm in diameter and about 10 μm larger than in the L-styled morph (Mann Whitney U-test; p < 0.001).
